Alexander Graham Bell

Alexander Graham Bell, the first famous inventor we have learned about, was introduced this week as students worked in pairs to partner read biographical text.  Through this, several reading comprehension strategies were practiced.  First, students focused on reading for detail, each selecting four from their reading.  Then, working individually students completed a character map about Bell identifying important events in his life, identifying his major accomplishments, describing what he was like, and writing feelings about him.  Many of these items were used to create a timeline about Bell.  Working on vocabulary, students wrote definitions and sentences using the following terms:  deaf, inventor, tube, vibration, and wire.  Each of these comprehension skills will be practiced as we further our study of famous inventors and biographies.
