About Independent Schools

What is an Independent School?

The Parents’ Guide to Independent Schools further defines some of The Summit’s foundational guiding principles:

  • Able to set its own curriculum and freedom in the choice of its students
  • Unreliant on Government or Local Authority finance
  • Operating on tuition charge, gifts, or investment yields of endowment

An Independent School is also:

  • A private, pre-collegiate learning institution
  • Organized as a not-for-profit corporation with 501(c)(3) status
  • Governed by self-perpetuation Board of Directors/Trustees
  • Free to define its own mission
  • Free to regulate admissions (admitting only those appropriate to the mission)
  • Free to define teacher credentials
  • Free to teach what the school decides is important
  • Accountable to parents, communities, and accrediting agencies
  • Dedicated to uphold high academic and behavior standards

Advantages of Independent School

The main advantage of an independent school is their ability to concentrate on meeting the needs and aspirations of their pupils, rather than spending too much time on government-imposed targets.
