Art

The Summit Preparatory School’s new art program introduces students to a variety of art techniques and mediums while learning more about famous artists. Through the study of famous artists, students learn to recognize works by each artist and his or her style of art. Each student is also inspired to create his or her own artwork based on the style of each artist. The art concepts taught to each student increase in complexity as the student progresses through school, enabling him/her to build on prior learning or skills. All students cover the elements of art (line, shape, color, texture, space, value and form) but have different classroom applications by grade level. The elements of art are the foundation of the art curriculum, upon which the Principles of Design (balance, movement, rhythm, contrast, unity, variety, pattern, and emphasis) are built into the curriculum. Building upon the elements and principles, students apply their knowledge to cultural diversity in art during the third trimester. Each grade is introduced to art from a different country or continent. Art is integrated into the curriculum of each grade level allowing students to make associations between the art classroom and homeroom.
Students are encouraged to express themselves through their art through open-ended activities, employing the freedom of choice and ability to reflect their own personality and preferences as well as technique. While the majority of the art created in class is done by the individual, there are times when students work in a whole group, small groups or partners on projects. Once a year, the class comes together to produce one cohesive piece of art that is auctioned off at the annual gala fundraiser.
