HS English

The principal goals of Honors English are to prepare students for reading, writing, research, and communicating on the collegiate level, to support learning across the HS curriculum, and to develop skills that can be used lifelong for work or pleasure.

HS writing will continue working on the writing process, developing and understanding their personal writing process. High school students will concentrate heavily on essay writing and the research process. The five paragraph essay and Big Six information skills will provide a foundation and framework for writing collegiate level research papers. Students will also work creatively with short fiction, poetry, and playwriting.

For 2011/12 high school literature will be focused on philosophical writings over many different cultures and time periods. This literary focus is coordinated closely with the social studies focus for 2011/12 on the inquiry question, “What does it mean to be human?” This focus will be explored through the traditional social science topics of psychology, anthropology, and sociology.
