The Summit upper school students participated in the Great ShakeOut earthquake drill this morning. At exactly 10:17am on 10/17/2013 2.4 million people in the central US and 18 million people globally participated in a “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” drill. After the drill the students did a Hazard Hunt of their classrooms at the Landers Theatre to identify non-structural objects that could fall and cause injury during an earthquake. This drill fit in nicely with the curriculum this year as the Social Studies classes are learning about Springfield and the Ozarks by exploring disaster scenarios. Springfield is only about 300 miles away from the New Madrid seismic zone, the most seismically active area in the United States east of the Rockies.
