Community Helpers Week – Wednesday

We had many exciting community helpers visit our classroom today!  This morning, Kindergarten students visited with firefighters and learned about Fire Safety.  Your kindergartener has a few important questions to ask you…. do we have working smoke alarms?  Where is the outdoor family meeting place in case of a fire?  Do we ever go back inside a burning building? (No!) Students also learned about the purposes of all the gear firefighters wear, what to do when there is a fire in your home, (how to crawl underneath the smoke, test a door before opening it), and what to do if a firefighter is in your home trying to find you (make as much noise as possible!).

This afternoon, Mr. Richardson visited our classroom and explained his job as a meter reader at City Utilities, along with the many other things that happen at City Utilities. Students were quick to recognize the importance of electricity when Mr. Richardson explained that is how the fridge and television work!  Students also learned about water, natural gas, and public transportation provided by the city.  Ask your Kindergartener to tell you about the shoes that linemen wear to climb up poles and repair power lines.

At the end of the day, we had a visit from Officer Clawson, a Springfield Police Officer.  Officer Clawson told us many stories about his responsibilities as a police officer and explained the important tools on his belt and other parts of his uniform. Students were happy to receive Junior Deputy badges and display them proudly on their uniform shirts!  Students are also bringing home a piece of the police tape that Officer Clawson roped us in with to mark our classroom as a “crime scene.”  Students listened carefully during his presentation because you have to pay attention when you are in a crime scene!  We also got to take a look into his police car.

Students are getting better and better at asking important questions!  Some of the best questions I heard today included, “How long have you been doing your job?” “What training did you need for your job?” “How do you help people?” and “How much do you have to work?”  Students are preparing for next week as we will begin our Community Helpers costumes and presentations.
