How to Cook a Turkey

When I think of reasons to be thankful, 17 young scholars come to mind.  Thank you for the opportunity to learn, laugh, and grow with your children everyday.  Please know that your support at home is invaluable and is part of what makes The Summit such a special place to teach and learn.  In case you need some help cooking your turkey (or just want a few laughs), check out the advice from Kindergarten students below on how to do just that.  Happy Thanksgiving!  I’ll see you on Monday, November 27.

How to Cook a Turkey (According to 5 & 6 Year Olds)

  • “First, go get your turkey from Target.  Take it home.  Turn the oven on and cook your turkey for like 10 minutes.  Your oven should be at 9 temperature.  Now take it out and let it cool off.  Set it out on the table and wait for your guests to come!  That’s all!” (Solace)
  • “Go to Walmart and you have to go to the back of the store to find the turkey.  Then go to the toy section and pick up a few toys for Bishop.  Then see what time it is… it’s 12:00!  Send the envelopes to people and so they come to Thanksgiving.  Granny always brings Granny rolls and the biggest one is for Bishop.  Use a knife to cut open the turkey…Use a grill to cook the turkey for about ten minutes.  Then look at the clock… It’s 7:00!  It’s been ten minutes so take off the turkey and eat it!” (Bishop)
  • “Get your turkey from any store you think will have it.  Take it home and add seasonings like salt and sandwich seasonings.  Then cook it inside the oven for thirty minutes or so at 4 or 2 temperature.  It has to cool off a little bit, then eat it!” (Dash)
  • “Go buy your turkey at the store for $5.  Then take it home and cook it in the oven.  Make sure the oven is at 2 temperature and leave it in there for 5 minutes.  Then you take it out of the oven and let it cool off for 5 minutes.  Then you eat it!” (Aurora)
  • “Go to the farm and get a turkey.  Get your milk and eggs, too!  Take it all home and clean up the turkey.  Put some black pepper and salt on the turkey! Put it in the oven for 39 minutes at warm/a little hot temperature.  The oven beeps when it is done… go get it out! Now it’s time to eat!” (Kris)
  • “Tell your dad to go into the woods and catch a turkey.  He’ll just have to run and catch it! Then take it into the house and take off all the feathers.  Now put it on the grill for a couple minutes… not a lot.  Now take it off the grill and put it on a plate.  Now you can make pictures for your mommy and daddy!” (Becca)
  • “Go get the turkey out of the jungle. Grab it! Now take it home and use the feathers to tickle your nose.  When you’re done tickling, put the feathers in the trash. Put the turkey in the oven at cold then hot temperature for 100 minutes.  Then I’ll eat the whole thing!” (Samantha)
  • “Go to a store like Target and get the cold turkey.  Get some decorations, too! Put the decorations out when you get home so you can have a celebration.  Put the turkey in the microwave for 10 seconds… Sometimes that might feel like an hour.  Make some meals that you can give out to people who need food.  Then you can work at Mommy’s work. We eat all the food!” (Vivien)
  • “First go get the turkey from the grocery store.  Bring it home and take the wrapper off.  Then clean the insides out… get all the blood out.  Make all the other Thanksgiving food while the turkey is cooking.  Put the turkey in the oven for probably 3 hours at 15 degrees.  Use the thermometer to check the turkey and then eat it!” (Matt)
  • “Go into the woods and look for a turkey, then shoot it.  Take it home and wash it.  Make sure you take the blood out.  Then scrape it to take the feathers off.  Then cook it by putting it on the grill at 2 temperature for 30 minutes.  Then take it off the grill and eat it!” (Mason)
  • “Go to a barn and ask the farmer if you can have one of his turkeys to eat.  The farmer will give you one so take it home.  Put the turkey on a pan and put all the ingredients in… like water, powder, lots of liquid, and a teensy bit of sugar.  The turkey spreads out when you mix it.  Cook it in the kitchen on the stove for 10 minutes and 5 seconds.  Slice it up when it’s done and then eat it!  Wipe your mouth off when you’re done!” (Boston)
  • “First you buy it at the store… check it out for $35.  Bring it home and cook it.  Just cut it up into one big piece and then put it in the oven.  Turn the switch to turn on the oven to 35 degrees.  Leave it in the oven for 11 minutes.  Then you eat it! Put your plate in the sink when you’re done.” (Sterling)
  • “First, get the turkey from the market.  Then you cut it up with the big thing.  Then you put it in the pan.  Turn the knobs on the oven . Put it in and it will DING when it’s done.  Then put it in your kitchen and put it on a plate.  Eat it with a fork!” (Deacon)
  • “First get the turkey from the store.  Then go home and take out all the groceries you bought.  Then you cook it in the oven at hot temperature for ten minutes.  Then you blow on it because if you eat it hot it will be really hot in your mouth!” (Cyrus)
  • “Get your turkey maybe from Walmart.  Then go home and put away all your groceries.  Play and relax for awhile… until dinner’s ready. Cook the turkey in the oven at warm temperature for maybe 20 minutes.  Take it out and set the other food on it.  Then we eat it all!” (Johnathan)
  • “Well I don’t eat turkey.  We eat Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches on Thanksgiving.  Get 2 pieces of bread and you get peanut butter and then jelly.  Put the peanut butter and jelly on the bread and then you put the bread on top of the bread!  Then you heat it up in the microwave for a minute.  Then take it out and eat it!” (Hutton)
  • “Go get your turkey from the farmer.  Take it home and put a lobster inside of it.  Put a toy inside the lobster… so it’s really cool! Put it all on the fire to cook. It takes 10 minutes.Put some yummy foods with it like chicken nuggets. I love chicken nuggets! And some grapes, yeah! When you’re done you can eat it!” (Tyler)
