This week in middle school science…
Projects due May 15:
- choose something that makes or uses mechanical and/or electromagnetic waves (examples: instrument, animal, cell phone, microwave, camera)
- work with a partner or by yourself
- describe how waves are made or used by your object – BE SPECIFIC!!!
- create a presentation with powerpoint, prezi, or demonstration
- hand in bibliography with at least three sources – SHARE WITH ME IN GOOGLE DOCS

This week in middle school science…
1. Share your articles/videos about the Sun - solar features, eclipses, sunsets, ultraviolet radiation, and origin. View the google doc to remember which topic you chose. Be sure to have discussion or review questions to accompany your article.
2. Constellation Viewing (6th grade) – be prepared to talk about your constellation; you might include facts such as the constellation’s history, how many stars it contains, its location, etc.
3. The Moon - we will look at folklore, phases of the moon and different theories on the moon’s origin.

Congratulations to Jack J, Jack L, Harry, Emily, Pfifer, Rose, Krista, Mikaela, and Katie for all the science fair awards they won at the Regional Fair! And, congratulations to the entire middle school for finishing science fair for the 2011-12 school year. You put in so much time and hard work, and I appreciate all your effort. Great job, everyone!

This week in middle school science…
1. SUMMIT SCIENCE FAIR WEDNESDAY!!! This will take place during your regular science class on Wednesday. Please bring your report to school printed and bound in a binder or folder with prongs. You should also bring your completed display board.
*You will present your project to a judge and answer their questions about your experiment.
2. DUE MONDAY, APRIL 2: Space body poem project – finish this during class. We will present them to the class. Use google doc for directions.
Remember, the Regional Science Fair is at MSU next Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (4/3-4/5). You will need to be with your project for judging April 3 from 6:30-8:30pm at Hammons Student Center. This is not an optional event – you have worked very hard on this project, and you should be proud to present it to the judges : )

This week in middle school science, we will…
1. Finish last week’s space science assignments (refer to previous blog post). Let me know when you are finished.
2. Choose a space object in our solar system from the list in google docs, and write your name next to it. Conduct your research.
3. Finish all science fair experiments that need to be done at school.
4. Record science fair data in Excel and analyze using charts and graphs.
5. Bring in a display board and craft supplies, so you can work on your board the following week in class.
**All projects (reports and boards) should be finished by March 16 unless you have made other arrangements with me.
Calling all 8th graders…your scientific paper presentation competition is this Friday, March 9. Your paper should be finished by the end of the school day on Monday and emailed to me in an attachment that I can send to the competition director. You also need to put together your presentation (powerpoint or prezi).

This week in middle school science…
1. Science fair experiments
2. Earth‘s Rotation and Seasons. Please discuss with a partner and make notes on the following questions when finished reading/viewing.
a. What is Earth’s axis? Is it more horizontal or vertical?
b. How long does it take for Earth to make one rotation? How fast is Earth moving?
c. How is rotation related to day and night?
d. How do Earth’s rotation and orbit work together to create seasons?
e. Define equinox and solstice.
*On your own, choose someplace you would like to visit. Research its latitude and longitude. Describe how its location affects its temperature and seasons. Make note of these things and be prepared to share with the class.
3. Read about how last year’s earthquake in Japan increased Earth’s wobble.
4. **8th grade – work on analyzing science fair results and writing your lab reports.
5. Solar System Introduction: Watch the video and make notes about the following topics.
a. sun spots
b. solar prominences
c. corona
d. order of planets orbiting sun
6. Choose one space body in our solar system (Sun, Moon, and planets) to research. Project details to follow.
