LOCKDOWN COMMUNICATION AND PROCEDURES
10-18-06

A crisis is any situation, expected or unexpected, involving concerns for safety, security, well-being of students, staff and community.  It could be any of the following:

  • An evacuation of the school due to fire, explosion, bomb threats, gas leaks, etc.
  • Tornados/severe weather
  • A medical emergency
  • A potentially violent or threatening person on school grounds or in the building

The Summit Preparatory School has a crisis management plan. Your child will be involved in practice drills at various times throughout the year. We practice the fire drill, the duck and cover tornado drill, and the lockdown drill. The lockdown drill is used to prepare for situations that might include a danger inside the building. While we practice this drill with students, we do not go in-depth on discussion of specific uses. We believe it is important not to alarm young students unnecessarily. We talk about it in terms of being similar to the tornado duck and cover. If you have any questions regarding crisis management or safety practices at The Summit, please contact our office at 417.869.8077.

In the Event of a Lockdown:

  • In the event that administration or public officials (Springfield Police) declare a safety emergency, all students will remain in the building.  This will be known as a lockdown.  The Summit will practice its first lockdown on October 26, 2006.
  • All faculty and staff are assigned a specific responsibility within the building.
  • During a lockdown, students will remain in their current classroom where teachers will lock the door and supervise them as they await further instructions.
  • Students taking P.E. classes at the time of the lockdown will remain in a locked locker room with their instructor until they are given further instructions.
  • Parents will be asked to remain outside of the building until the nature of any threat or emergency can be determined. Once admitted, parents will report to Cundiff Hall to receive further instructions.
  • If there is a threat to the safety and integrity of the building, the building may have to be evacuated.  In the event of an evacuation, students and staff will be directed to Park Crest Baptist Church, just east of the school, and parents will be notified regarding pick-up procedures.
