Summit Preparatory School of Southwest Missouri
 Program Overview

Purpose Statement

The Lower School Spanish program at The Summit Preparatory School is aimed to immerse each student into the language and culture.    When appropriate, Spanish is integrated into the curriculum allowing the student to make connections with what they are learning in other subject areas.

Beginning in Kindergarten, the teacher primarily instructs in Spanish while making use of many visual aids and body language to ensure comprehension.  They begin with the basics (alphabet, colors, numbers, etc.) and gradually build their listening vocabulary.

By the 4th grade students will have developed an impressive vocabulary, conversational skills, writing skills, and a great understanding of Hispanic cultures.   The Lower School Spanish program is designed to stay true to The Summit’s mission of making the learning process a worthwhile and enjoyable experience.

Teaching Strategies

A Total Physical Response (TPR) method is used in learning Spanish.  This method involves using actions and physical activities to utilize both sides of the brain in learning a foreign language.

Songs, games, silly chants, role playing, using gestures and physical movement are among the activities utilized.  Cooperative learning, hands-on activities, and projects will also play a role in the Spanish learning process.

The teacher will serve as the facilitator while the students create their own questions to ask one another in Spanish or organize other activities or games that utilize their conversational skills.
