We have used picture representations, number stories, number bonds, addition sentences and more. This week, we have been working on breaking down a very important number \u2013 10!<\/p>\n<p>Students need to be confident in making 10 because it is the foundation for nearly all math skills to come. Mastering combinations that add up to 10 helps them develop mental math skills, making it easier to tackle more complex math problems later. It also enhances their number sense, allowing them to recognize patterns and relationships between numbers, which is essential for future math concepts like place value, regrouping, and problem-solving.<\/p>\n<p>To practice making 10, we have been using the same strategies as we used with breaking down single digit numbers, as well as using music, art and hands-on practice. Each day, we have been listening and singing along to Jack Hartmann\u2019s\u00a0<em>I Can Say My Number Pairs<\/em>. We love this one because as the song goes on, it gets a little faster and a little faster!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ch7KzI3n2Zk&amp;list=RDch7KzI3n2Zk&amp;start_radio=1\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ch7KzI3n2Zk&amp;list=RDch7KzI3n2Zk&amp;start_radio=1<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Also, students completed a &#8216;composing 10 craft&#8217; for the hallway using polka-dot monsters! They were to select two colors and color some one color and the other a different color. We discussed how composing is putting two parts together to make a total, but decomposing is taking the total and breaking it into two groups. We brought movement into this concept. They stood in a line on the carpet and once I said 3,2,1 &#8220;decompose&#8221; they were to break into two groups on two different rugs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To conclude the week&#8217;s learning, we played a game with partners. Students were paired and had to create combinations that add up to ten. We played as many times as it took for each team to get done first.
