Native Americans

This week students will begin their study of Native Americans. We will explore the diversity of tribal groups throughout North America, beginning with the Northeast Woodlands, specifically the Iroquois.  As an introduction, students selected books about Native Americans for independent reading. Then, we examined maps of Native American groups.  We discussed which groups lived in our state, which lived in the largest and smallest areas, and which groups lived in the coldest and warmest areas.  As we learn about each tribe, students will examine their region, homes, clothing, food, customs, tools, and art.  We will also learn about various famous Native Americans.

Above is a sample of a Native American tribal map that first grade students examined.
