Number and Operations

Students have been practicing addition and subtraction since the beginning of the school year.  We will dive deeper into these topics throughout second trimester as we focus on the math strand of number and operations.  To begin this study, students viewed the basic addition and basic subtraction BrainPop Jr. videos.  Through the video, students were given a broad overview of the various addition and subtraction strategies we will practice in first grade. The videos demonstrated adding and subtracting through the use of number lines and fact families, skills that we will continue to practice.  Strategies first graders will learn include zero facts, counting on, counting back, doubles, doubles +1 (also called neighbors), make a ten, fast tens, fast nines, and leftovers.
