Seminole

Students are now learning about the Seminole of the Southeast.  The Seminole were part of the Creek people that settled in Florida.  The word Seminole means wanderer or runaway.  Students have learned that they often wore colorful clothing and many beaded necklaces.  They enjoyed making their own beaded necklaces, while practicing important fine motor skills.  Like the Iroquois, the Seminole planted corn, beans, and squash.  Hominy was a favorite food of the Seminole.   Many of the Seminole lived in swampy areas, and thus they built wooden huts above the ground called chickees.  Chickees didn’t have walls, which allowed cool breezes to flow through.  Students are enjoying comparing and contrasting the Seminole and the Iroquois tribe, as we begin a large graph that will be posted in our classroom.  We will add information as we learn about each new tribe.
