Nonfiction

First graders are reading nonfiction science vocabulary readers as we learn about weather.  Features of nonfiction that students have been introduced to include: a table of contents, chapters, headings, photographs, captions, labels, boldface or highlighted words, diagrams, and a glossary.

Along with each nonfiction reader, students are using graphic organizers, learning tools that visually represent information.  Graphic organizers aid students in recalling, reviewing, summarizing, and analyzing what they have read.

Books read thus far included Weather! and Blizzards!. Vocabulary words introduced through these two books are as follows:  Fahrenheit, revolve, satellite, thermometer, tilt, weather forecaster, weather station, billion, blizzard, contains, predict, snowdrift, and whiteout.
