Native American Games

To enhance their study of Native American culture, first graders spent an afternoon making equipment for and playing a traditional game. Historically, some Native Americans made balls using a small rock, packing it with hair from the fastest animal or person around, and covering it with animal hide. Summit students made their balls using rocks packed with grass and mulch and covered with paper. Students then challenged themselves by lying down and throwing their ball backwards over their head as far as they could, a surprisingly difficult task! They also kicked their balls around a field, no hands allowed, similar to how the Native Americans did.
