Introducing the concept of measurement, students listened to the book Millions to Measure by David M. Schwartz, which took us back in time to understand how people measured many years ago. Distance, size, weigth, and volume were each discussed as we discovered the difference between nonstandard and standard units of measurement. Trying our own hand at measuring, students used a variety of nonstandard units to measure either the length, height, or width of objects in the classroom. By measuring each item two ways, we saw how nonstandard units could cause confusion. Moving forward, we will first explore customary measurements and then the metric system.
