After learning all about mammals, first graders are now learning about amphibians. We have discovered that amphibians are cold blooded vertebrates with a bare body and more than one way to breathe.
Through Frogs by Gail Gibbons, students were able to review life cycles, a topic studied in Kindergarten, and expand their understanding of amphibians. Working in pairs students read Frogs and Toads. Related comprehension activities including reading sentences and identifying adjectives and the nouns they modify. Students practiced their visualization skills as they were introduced to similies which made comparisons among frogs. Reading aloud The Magic School Bus Hops Homes: A Book About Animal Habitats and watching the corresponding Discovery Streaming video was a favorite activity.
In our studies, we have found that many kinds of frogs can be found in the rain forest. This week, after viewing a BrainPop Jr. video and measuring the length of frog tongues, students each selected one frog to research. First graders were asked to do the following: determine where in the world their frog lives, describe their frog’s habitat, find out what their frog eats, find the size and weight of their frog, discover how their frog stays safe, and list interesting facts about their frog.
