Birds

First graders have learned all about the last classification, birds.  We have discovered that birds have feathers, a backbone, and lungs.  They are warm blooded animals that hatch from eggs.  Birds have a beak, two legs, and two wings.  Through partner reading, students have read fiction and nonfiction books about birds including Why Do Robins Hop? and Weird Bird Beaks.  Comprehension strategies emphasized included identifying problems and solutions as well as comparing and contrasting.  Students continued to practice identifying various nouns, adjectives, and verbs, and they are tasked with incorporating these in their daily writing.

As we discover more information about birds, first graders are also learning about the importance of migration.  BrainPop Jr. videos and read alouds serve to better our understanding of animal migration.  In the final days of school we will be researching various birds to complete our field guides.
