Today, first graders learned to play the game How Much More?. In the game, students find the difference between two given numbers. Manipulatives such as linking cubes are used to help students see that the difference can be determined by taking away the part that is the same. As they played, students were encouraged to explain their mental computation strategies, such as counting up from the smaller number, counting down from the larger number, using a double, or using a near double.
