As a follow up to our George Washington Carver field trip, students are working in teams to complete a Peanut Lab. Through the lab, students are asked to follow the steps of the scientific method. Given the problem, do all peanuts have the same properties or characteristics, students were asked to hypothesize, or make an educated guess. Then, they listed the materials needed for the lab, a shelled and unshelled peanut. Next, students were asked to follow a list of procedures. Using careful observation, they examined their shelled peanuts recording their findings and drawing a diagram. After we observed, we mixed up our peanuts and tried to find our original peanut. As we continue with the lab tomorrow, these steps will be repeated for the unshelled peanut. Upon completion, students will record their findings by writing answers to questions and determining conclusions.
