A Word’s Worth

We tried out a new spelling center today, and it proved to be challenging for all as it integrated many aspects of our learning.  First, students were asked to write their spelling words. Then, they were given a Word’s Worth chart which assigns each letter of the alphabet to a coin and corresponding value.  Using the chart and coins, students were asked to count and add the coins, determining the value of the word.  First grade skills addressed in this one center included handwriting, spelling, coin identification, skip counting, and adding.  We will try out this center again next week when we have a new list of spelling words.
