Spelling

Today we began our weekly spelling routine.  The first spelling pattern we are focusing on is CVC words.  This means words with a short vowel sound that follow a consonant vowel consonant pattern.  As part of our routine, students worked together to generate a list of words that fit this pattern.  Then, each student created a numbered list and selected 10 words for their own personal spelling list.  This list will be kept in the spelling folder in the backpack.  Keeping the list in the backpack will allow students to use their spelling words in spelling and word work centers at school and practice words at home if needed.  This week’s pattern should serve as a review of short vowels and word families, each of which will be practiced in center work this week.  Reviewing previously learned skills will help students to be successful and build confidence as we move onto new spelling patterns.  While we will complete a partner spelling assessment on Friday, the overall goal of spelling practice in first grade is to apply our spelling rules and patterns in our writing.
