C.O.P.S.

First graders have learned a new strategy to help them edit.  As part or our daily review this week, students were introduced to the C.O.P.S. strategy.  The cops are checking our writing, and they are looking for correct capitalization, organization, punctuation, and spelling.  First graders will look to see that capital letters are in the correct place including the at the beginning of the sentence, in proper nouns, and in titles.  Looking at organization, students will check that their sentences sound right, that they have used appropriate word spaces, and that they have used neat handwriting.  Students will check that they used the correct ending punctuation, commas, and apostrophes.  Finally, students will check that they have spelled all of their words correctly.  By writing out the acronym beside their sentences, students are encouraged and supported in correct their own writing.
