Happy Thanksgiving

As we began our trimester study of Native Americans, first grade students have not only been learning about the Wampanoag tribe and Squanto, but also the Pilgrims, Life in Plymouth Colony, and the first Thanksgiving.  Working in pairs, students read about the Pilgrims journey from England to America.  In their reading, they identified and defined new vocabulary words including, Pilgrim, Mayflower, New World, voyage, and hardtack.  Introducing mapping skills, students colored a map showing the path the Pilgrims traveled, labeled a compass rose, identified oceans and landmasses, and sequenced the Pilgrims journey.  A few favorite activities including creating a Mayflower model and making Pilgrim puppets.  First and second grade students enjoyed a bountiful feast complete with traditional and nontraditional items.  Many students were very adventurous in trying new things such as as nasaump.  We topped off our celebration with video about Squanto and a turkey pinata.  Thank you to all of our families for contributing to this fun and special event!
