Students have been working on building number sense all year, and for the second trimester we are focusing heavily on numbers and operations. After learning about number bonds and strengthening our understanding of part whole relationships, students began working on addition and subtraction with numbers to 10. We have learned many addition and subtraction strategies that we are applying when working in centers including zero facts, counting on, counting back, doubles, doubles +1, make a ten, fast tens, and run away ones.
From here, we will continue to build incrementally, working with numbers to 20, addition and subtraction to 20, numbers to 40, and then addition and subtraction to 40, allowing students to practice strategy application, computation skills, and mental math. Working on addition and subtraction together, students are reinforcing their understanding of inverse relationships and building a foundation for understanding algebraic concepts. Through games, manipulatives, visual models, worksheets, and online resources, students are practicing computation, memorizing facts, and solving problems.
