Martin Luther King Jr.

Today, first graders learned all about Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., discovering that he was an important African-American leader in the Civil Rights Movement.  After reading aloud Happy Birthday Martin Luther King Jr., we discussed key terms and concepts including segregation, discrimination, and prejudice.  Students selected from a number of literacy based centers including assembling and completing an activity book about Martin Luther King Jr., listening to a portion of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, completing a word search, and partner reading the poem “Love Each Other.”  A favorite activity was selecting a book about Dr. King, practicing reading the book, and then sharing it with Kindergarten students.
