This week we are focusing heavily on place value concepts as we further explore number relationships.  Place value is the value of a digit depending on its position in the number, such as ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands places.  First grade students are learning that our system of number writing is called a base-ten system as it is based on groupings of ten.  Using manipulatives such as base-ten blocks, unifix cubes, place value mats, and hundreds charts, we are building and breaking down numbers. Students will be reading, writing, and comparing numerals into the thousands place through the use of worksheets and games.  A few favorites this week have included partner reading numerals, playing place value dominoes, and using base-ten blocks to play Roll, Build, Draw, Write.  Several links found on the class blog, including IXL, NLVM, That Quiz, and ABCya, provide activities to support place value understanding.
