This week, as we conclude our study of weather, we will be learning about severe weather including, floods, hurricanes, and tornadoes. Today, working with partners, first graders learned all about floods. They discovered the difference between a river flood and a costal flood, determining where each would occur. They defined key terms including levee, crops, damage, and rescue. Comprehension strategies required identifying the main idea and supporting details and determining problems caused by floods.
Tomorrow and Wednesday we will be reading about hurricanes and tornadoes. As we learn about hurricanes, students will determine whether given statements are true or false. They will also write sentences to answer hurricane riddles. In learning about tornadoes we will answer questions and complete cause and effect statements.
Finally, students will select one topic either floods, hurricanes, or tornadoes to write about in their journals. They will be asked to use weather related vocabulary words and safety tips learned throughout the week. We will then publish, or type, our reports in a class book on severe weather.
