Main Idea and Details

First grade students continue to learn and practice reading strategies and comprehension skills.  Today, students read the book Animals Animals in which each page described interesting facts about various animals found throughout the world.  As students read, they were encouraged to connect to prior knowledge thinking about what they already know about the animal and making connections.

Practicing comprehension skills, students identified the main idea by recording the animals they read about in the book.  Then, they provided a detail about each animal such as its habitat, its diet, or a characteristic about it.  Practicing grammar along with comprehension, students read sentences relating to the book, identified the adjective in the sentence, and then determined the noun it described.
