Spelling

Today, we began our weekly spelling routine.  For our first week, students will be working with initial l blends.  An initial blend is found at the beginning of the word and contains two consonants, which when put together still make their own sound.   Working as a group we reviewed the sounds of the following initial l blends:  bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, and sl.  After brainstorming a list of words for each blend, first graders selected ten words for their spelling list.

Spelling lists will be kept in the yellow spelling folder.  We will be practicing  these words  as well as other words fitting the l blend pattern throughout spelling and word work centers this week.  You and your child are welcome to further practice individual words at home. Please encourage your child to remember to keep the yellow folder in his or her backpack and return it to school daily.  Our first partner spelling assessment will be this Friday.
