Shut the Box

Working to reinforce additional and mental math skills, first graders learned a new, yet traditional math game yesterday, Shut the Box.  In the game, players roll two dice into the box and add to find the sum.  Using tiles numbered 1 to 12, players may cover any combination of numbers equalling that sum.  So, for example, a child may roll 6 and 4 to equal ten.  He or she may then cover any combination such as 1, 2, and 7, to match that sum.  The object of the game is to be the first to cover all the numbers and “shut the box” or to have the lowest remaining sum of numbers.  An online or printable version of the game can be found at the following link, which will be included on the first grade links page for student access.
