Columbus Day

Continuing to learn about American holidays, today we celebrated Columbus Day.  Students enjoyed viewing the Animated Hero Classic titled A Young Christopher Columbus which emphasized how Columbus became an explorer and his role in connecting the Old World (Europe, Asia, and Africa) with the New World (America).  Our discussion centered on the different historical perspectives and misconceptions surrounding Columbus.  During centers students assembled and read a make and take book practicing the reading comprehension strategy of visualization by creating illustrations to support the text.  Practicing addition facts, students solved number sentences to color Columbus’ ships by matching the sums to a given code.  Spelling, word work, matching, and mapping were also integrated in a Columbus Day themed activity book.
