Inventions

This week students were introduced to our next social studies topic, inventions and inventors.  Working with second grade, students brainstormed a large list of inventions.  Then, we shared an online book about inventions and students explored many invention books in our classroom library.   Today, students began an invention research project, with each student selecting one invention to complete a  graphic organizer answering the following questions:

  • Who invented it?
  • Where was it invented?
  • How did the idea come to the inventor?
  • What tools did they use?
  • How was it made?
  • How does it work?
  • How is it helpful to people?
  • When was it invented?
  • What materials were used?
  • Were simple machines used?
  • Were compound machines used?

As we learn about inventions, students will continue to explore simple and compound machines.  They will further practice using the scientific method to conduct basic experiments.  Finally,  we will also introduce students to several famous historical inventors beginning with Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison, and Benjamin Franklin.
