Vocabulary

First grade students continue to build vocabulary skills.  Currently, vocabulary activities are integrated with our science topic of simple machines as well as individual reading.  Working with simple machines, students have written and illustrated new vocabulary words, worked with analogies as we discuss the relationship between sets of words, and completed cloze sentences by determining the missing word.

Vocabulary is being further addressed as we work on our next part of speech, verbs.  Students have learned that verbs are words that show action or describe what is happening in a sentence.  To introduce verbs, first graders are sharing in grammar read alouds, listening to songs about verbs, and viewing brief videos on the topic.  Throughout centers, including various games and worksheets, students will continue to practice identifying and using verbs correctly.
