Alexander Graham Bell

This week, students began learning about  the first of many famous inventors, Alexander Graham Bell.  As an introduction, students worked in pairs to partner read a biographical text about Bell. Through this, several reading comprehension strategies were practiced.  First, students focused on reading for detail, each selecting four facts from their reading to write in their own words.  After viewing a BrainPop Jr. video, students wrote skits in which Bell presented his telephone invention to someone.

Working individually, students completed a character map about Bell, determining important events in his life, identifying his major accomplishments, describing what he was like, and writing feelings about him.  A favorite activity was making our very own telephones, as we experimented with sound.   Wrapping up our study of Bell and his work, students will create timelines sequencing major events in his life.
