Rosa Parks

In honor of her birthday, yesterday, first grade students continued learning about Rosa Parks.  With a brief introduction provided as we discussed the civil rights movement and Dr. Martin Luther King, students were ready to build upon their prior knowledge. Reading aloud a biography of Parks, written by our current author, David Adler, students learned about Parks’ life as a young child growing up on a farm near Montgomery, Alabama.  They learned of her determination in achieving her educational goals and her role as an activist who fought for equal rights.  Following a partner read, students completed comprehension activities comparing life in the 1950s to life today.  In the coming days, students will continue working on a written response, making their own bus book and writing about Parks’ achievements.
