How Big Is a Foot?

This week, first grade students are beginning to learn about linear measurements.  Introducing the topic, we watched a BrainPop Jr. video and read aloud How Big Is a Foot?. Through our studies, we will be working with nonstandard (paperclips, unifix cubes, etc.) and standard (centimeters, inches, feet, yards)  units to measure various classroom objects.  We will compare quantities determining which items are longer, shorter, taller, higher, or wider than others.  Using tools such as rulers, tape measures, and yard sticks, students will practice measuring accurately, compare units, recognize and use abbreviations, and estimate.
