First Day of First Grade

The first day of first grade was a huge success!  To begin the day, we completed several get to know you activities and began learning about important classroom procedures and routines.   After a shared read aloud of The Night Before First Grade, students discussed, wrote, and drew about their feelings on the night before first grade. Writings will be compiled into our first class book.  In centers, students read back to school themed books, worked with magna tiles, and practiced writing the alphabet in both uppercase and lowercase letters.

Students participated in their first STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) challenge.  Working in small groups, individuals were assigned roles as either the speaker, recorder, or materials manager.  The challenge simply asked the group to create something using 20 pipe cleaners and 4 sheets of aluminum foil.  Problem solving capabilities were put to the test as students worked together to develop and execute their plan.  Groups presented their creative construction to the class.
