Natural Resources

In a follow up to The Lorax, today we began learning about natural resources.  First graders enjoyed watching a brief animated video on the topic via BrainPOP Jr.  BrainPOP Jr. is a subscription based educational website for young students which we will use throughout the year as it covers a wide variety of curricular based content.  After watching the videos, students  will participate in supplemental activities including interactive quizzes,  experiments, games, jokes, comics, and written or drawn responses.  Today’s emphasis was learning new science related vocabulary terms.  These terms and definitions are listed below.

  • natural resource – something of value we get from the environment
  • renewable resource – a natural resource that can grow back or be replaced over time
  • non-renewable resource – a natural resource that cannot grow back or takes a very, very long time to be replaced
  • pollution– waste from humans that harms the environment
  • fossil fuel – a fuel formed in the earth and made from the remains of plants and animals. Coal and oil are fossil fuels.
