Congruent and Similar Figures

This week, in addition to continuing to work on our three-dimensional shape books, first graders have been learning about similar and congruent figures.  Similar figures have the same shape but are different sizes.  Congruent figures, however, have the same size and the same shape.  First graders are remembering what congruent figures are using simple hand motions to accompany the phrase “same size, same shape, congruent.”   Exploring congruent and similar figures, students have been introduced to new mathematical concepts including flips, turns, and slides.

 The above shapes are examples of congruent figures.
