Over the past few weeks, first grade students have been studying the weather. Introducing the topic, students have worked in pairs to read about weather learning what weather is, where weather happens, how the sun impacts weather, how seasons change, and why it is important to measure the weather. As we learn about weather, students will be expanding their vocabulary. Terms learned and discussed thus far include:
- Fahrenheit
- revolve
- satellite
- thermometer
- tilt
- weather forecaster
- weather station
- atmosphere (troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere)
After our introduction, students began building weather portfolios which will be used to collect and organize our weather related projects and materials for the remainder of the trimester. Topics yet to come include forms of precipitation, clouds, the water cycle, severe weather, measuring weather, mapping weather, and weather safety.
