Pictographs

After a lot of hard work, our pictographs are finally complete.  First grade students have learned how Native Americans of the Great Plains did not have a written language.  Instead, two means of communication they employed included a system of sign language and a system of pictographs, or picture writing.  This type of writing was used on rocks, robes, animal hide, and even tipis.

Using several resources indicating typical images or pictographs used by Native Americans of the Great Plains, first grade students created pictograph stories.   After drawing our stories, students typed and formatted them in Google Docs, creating a version we can read today.  Stop by the classroom to check our pictographs and translations!
