Water Cycle

Learning about the water cycle, first grade students are understanding the the process of how water moves and changes. After reading aloud Water Around the World and discussing key steps and terms of the process (precipitation, run off, accumulation, evaporation, transpiration, water vapor, and condensation), students have participated in several multi-sensory science activities.

Through the book students followed the drop of water around the world as it moved through the water cycle and transitioned between states of matter (solid, liquid, gas). They especially enjoyed searching for the drop, as it was hidden among the illustration on each page.

Returning to a well known nursery rhyme, we compared The Itsy Bitsy Spider to the water cycle.  Then, students cut, colored, and labeled diagrams of the water cycle.  Finally, we created our own water cycle in a bag experiment.  We will make and record observations for the remainder of the week.  Tomorrow, students can look forward to yet another experiment as we use sand, dirt and water to  answer the question, “Where do you think water for rain comes from?”
