Native American Research

First grade students are busy preparing their reports for our celebration next week.  After selecting a tribe, students used a variety of books and websites to research information on their tribe. Students were asked to find the following information and record it on a graphic organizer:

  • tribe
  • meaning of the tribes name
  • clothing
  • shelter
  • tools or weapons
  • crafts or symbols
  • important animals
  • interesting facts

Students used the information in their graphic organizer to write a first draft on GoogleDocs.  After completing the draft, students shared their document for feedback.  They responded to comments and edited their document accordingly.  Comments, such as those listed below, included a variety of questions or prompts to encourage students to self correct.

  • Does this sound right?
  • Remember to check for COPS.
  • Can you tell us more about _____?
  • Watch your spacing.

After several rounds of edits, students will begin formatting their writing.  They will record their references, and then we will publish, or print, our final documents.
