Money

First grade students have been practicing coin recognition. They are identifying values, skipping counting, adding, and recording amounts using dollars and cents notation.  Today’s centers integrated a variety of topics relating to money.

  • Money Books – Students partner read nonfiction and fiction selections about coins and money.  A few favorites included Caps for Sale and Alexander Who Used to Be Rich Last Sunday.
  • A Word’s Worth – Students practiced their spelling words while counting coins.  Using a chart assigning a coin and value to each letter, students wrote and solved number sentences for their spelling words.
  • Problem Solving – Students applied problem solving skills by selecting items to buy, determining the total cost, and counting the remaining change.
  • Money Exchange – Students grabbed a handful of pennies, counted the total, exchanged them for other coins, and recorded the total
  • IXL – Students completed 2 or more money skills on IXL.

Later this week, students can look forward to making  a personalized “coin creation,” complete with a profile and symbol. We will play a variety of money games including dominoes, puzzles, and “I Have Who Has.”
