Wow, we have had the best field trip weather we could ask for this year, and our final trip of the year, to the Nature Center, was huge success. Although there was a slight change of plans on our class, Our Busy, Nesting Birds enabled students to learning nesting habits and sounds of Missouri birds. We learned about ground nesting birds (turkey vultures, mallards, and geese) mud/plaster nesting birds (barn swallows), and burrow nesting birds (kingfisher). We examined cup shaped nests (cardinals, indigo bunting, robin, and blue-gray gnatcatcher) and examples of cavity nests (woodpeckers and prothonotary warblers).
After the class, students ventured out on a nature hike, which our guide deemed to be the “best field trip this season.” Students not only identified many of the bird calls learned in our class but saw all kinds of wildlife including a turkey, a snapping turtle, a lizard, and baby water snakes. We even witnessed a bull frog narrowly escape a northern water snake! It was a great day!
