Making Observations

First grade students are working to further develop science inquiry skills by asking questions and making observations about the world around them. Today, we learned how when we observe, we pay close attention to something and gather information about it.  After watching a brief BrainPop Jr. video, we headed out to the field to use our five senses and practice our observations skills.  As scientists, we will always put safety first, so first graders are learning the importance of only touching or tasting something if it is safe to do so.  Students were encouraged to record their findings on a table using pictures and words.  When we returned to the classroom, we shared our findings with one another and discovered we have many questions about the world around us.  Throughout the school year, we will be using various scientific tools including magnifying glasses, microscopes, rulers, measuring tapes, scales,  and thermometers to make observations.  Students will be encouraged to use different tools when they observe and learn which tool is best for which kind of observation.
