Sight Word Recognition

Among other initial reading assessments, first grade students are being assessed on sight word recognition.  At The Summit, we use the Fry word lists.  These lists begin with “The First Hundred” and continue to “The Tenth Hundred.”  In first grade, we will begin the year by reviewing the first 100, with a goal of mastering 400+ words by the end of the year.  As a class, we will focus on 10-15 words per week, which will be introduced  in a whole group setting and then added to the class word wall.  While some center work and small group instruction will provide sight word practice, the majority of instruction and practice will be individualized.  Through initial assessments, we have identified individualized word lists for each student.  These words will be kept in the red reading folder and practiced multiple times throughout the week.  Parent emails will indicate which word list each child is working to master.  The Fry word lists can be accessed on the link below.
