Beginning and Ending Digraphs

What are digraphs, and how are they different from blends?  Today, first grade students will be introduced to new phonetic patterns, digraphs. They will discover that like blends, digraphs are formed by two consonants.  They differ, however, as a digraph makes one sound rather than two.  We will remember this using a simple phrase (“a digraph is two letters that come together to make one sound”) and a corresponding motion. In the coming weeks, we will focus on the following digraphs: ch, sh, th, wh, ph, qu.
